Competition for the use of the Douglas Vapor Batch Plate (and the Crystal Clear Strips)

Douglas Instruments is running a competition open to all for the best research project using the new Douglas Vapor Batch Plate (and also the Crystal Clear Strips.  We will announce the first winner or winners in December 2004.)

Details:

  1. A prize will be awarded for the best scientific project using Douglas Instruments' crystallization plates.

  2. The project must use either the Douglas Vapor Batch Plate or the company's Crystal Clear Strips.  (The Vapor Batch Plate is preferred.)

  3. We expect most projects to involve macromolecular crystallization, but this is not necessary.  Other applications are very interesting to us.  If the project does involve crystallization it can use any method of crystallization.

  4. The competition aims to encourage practical advances that are helpful to other users, original ideas, and discoveries that increase the understanding of crystallization.

  5. Entries may be excluded if the judges feel that there is insufficient data or too few case studies to demonstrate the usefulness of the ideas.  Studies including many proteins and many conditions will, in general, be well received.

  6. Entries must be PC files, and must be HTML, PDF, MS Word or MS PowerPoint files.  Reports, posters, or multi-slide PowerPoint presentations are acceptable.

  7. Competitors may submit as many entries as they wish.

  8. Douglas Instruments may award several prizes (or none) depending on the standard of entries.

  9. Douglas Instruments may publish the winning entries on its web site.  Entries that do not win will not be published except with the authors' permission.

  10. Since the report may be published on the web, images of crystals may obviously increase the appeal of the report.

  11. Winners can choose a prize from the following: a flight, a lap-top or other PC, a camera, or cash equivalent to US$1000.  The value of all prizes will be limited to US$1000.

  12. Douglas Instruments will announce the next batch of winners by December 2004.

  13. If the competition is successful, the company may, at its discretion, run the competition again approximately every six months.

  14. Oryx and IMPAX users can find scripts for the Douglas Vapor Batch Plate at http://www.douglas.co.uk/software.htm .  (Files are available for both Windows and older DOS systems.)

  15. News and updates regarding this competition will be published at this URL.
